Skinny Girls Sessions, Days 10 & 11

It is done. Recording of the third Jim Neversink album, provisionally titled Skinny Girls Are Trouble, is complete. Producer Richard Lloyd leaves for New York City on Sunday, where he will mix the album in his own studio. We’re looking at a June release date. Here are some photos from the final couple of days of recording, with Timon Wapenaar laying down violin and mandolin, Rian Malan on acoustic guitar, Jim and Loandi on backing vocals and Jim on lap steel and guitar.

Skinny Girls Sessions, Day 10

Okay, so I moronically left my camera in the studio last night, so no pictures of the amazing Timon Wapenaar doing overdubs on violin and mandolin. No photographs, either, of the equally fabulous Loandi Boersma recording bass guitar. Yet. They’ll follow soon enough. But first, the penultimate day of recording, and then tonight’s show, with producer Richard Lloyd, at the Bohemian (you’d be crazy to miss it).

Skinny Girls Sessions, Day 9

We’re in the final stretch of the recording of Jim Neversink’s third album, provisionally titled Skinny Girls Are Trouble, produced by former Television guitarist Richard Lloyd and engineered by Peter Pearlson. On Tuesday (Day 9), we started decorating the cake, recording guitar and percussion overdubs. With just three days left in the studio (and a gig at The Bohemian with Richard on Thursday night – March 12), there’s a lot left to do. Here are some photographs from Day 9. We mostly took the weekend off from recording. On Saturday, I took Richard Lloyd out to the Tswaing meteorite crater, 80km north of Pretoria. Check out more photographs here.

Skinny Girls Sessions, Day 5

All we’ve seen for nearly a week is the inside of a studio, so we started day five with a quick visit to Emmarentia Dam. Good call, Jim.

Skinny Girls Sessions, Day 4

We were having some trouble with a complicated song, so headed into the next-door anechoic chamber for some introspection. As it turned out, it was less relaxing for some than for others. Here, your words leave your mouth and fall unceremoniously to the “floor”. With the door shut and the lights out, it makes no difference whether your eyes are open or closed.

The first day of recording of the new Jim Neversink record, Skinny Girls Are Trouble, couldn’t have gone better. Producer, ex-Television guitarist Richard Lloyd, was an inspirational choice. Jim and his band are gelling really well and the album is shaping up to be something quite special.
